Qualifications necessary to volunteer are as follows:
1. A high school graduate level of reading and writing.
2. Completion of three hours of tutor training with Read Muskegon staff.
3. All applicants are asked to sign a release for a background check.
Volunteer commitment is as follows:
1. Donate a minimum of one and a half hours of one-on-one literacy tutoring per week.
2. Preparation of a lesson for each session which takes approximately thirty minutes per week.
3. A one year commitment to tutor for Read Muskegon.
4. Attend a one and one half hour review session within the first six months, and then annually to discuss issues and improve tutoring skills.
5. Communicate with Read Muskegon on a regular basis (at least monthly).
6. Tutors and learners meet in designated, public locations only.
Read Muskegon provides:
1. Tutor training of at least three hours to start, then a review session at 6 months, followed by annual review sessions of at least one and a half hours.
2. Ongoing mentoring and support.
