VOLUNTEER TUTOR POSITION DESCRIPTION

Dedicated to positively impact the lives of adults through improved literacy.

Is tutoring for you?  Can you make a commitment of 2 hours per week for one year?  Do you enjoy helping others?  Do you enjoy reading?  Are you patient?  If yes, you may enjoy tutoring adult learners!  Tutoring is a supplement to teaching.  Literacy tutoring focuses on improving reading, spelling, and/or writing skills of the Learner.

Responsibilities:

  1. Complete Orientation session (1 hour) and Application with release for background check.
  2. Attend 3 hour Tutor Training or complete online training courses and submit certificates.
  3. Within two days of being matched, contact your Learner to set a time/public site for your first meeting.
  4. Tutors provide their own transportation to trainings and to meet weekly with the Learner.  Tutors and Learners may not provide transportation for each other.  All meetings are arranged in public facilities.
  5. Meet with Learners on a one-to-one or small group basis for 1 ½ hours per week (plus ½ hour preparation time).
  6. Be punctual for all sessions.  If you cannot meet your Learner or want to schedule a vacation and need a substitute, please call 231-766-5040.
  7. Maintain session focus on reading, spelling and/or writing skills.
  8. Complete commitment to one year of service as a literacy Tutor.
  9. Submit all required paperwork as requested and quarterly progress reports.
  10. Attend a Tutor Workshop at least once a year (within 6 months in the first year).

Qualifications:

  1. Passion for helping others learn to read
  2. Satisfactory result of background check
  3. Responsible, dependable, honest, and mature
  4. Friendly, patient, and sensitive to a diversity of adult learners
  5. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
